Welcome to the east stop of the Trump campaign shirt .besteestores There are lots of great Irish whiskeys out there.  The real question for you is how much you are looking to spend.  Whiskeys like Dew, and Powers are all solid lower-end whiskeys.  If your main interest is giving your friend something with a different name, any of those will do. If you want to step it up somewhat, there are lots of incrementally higher quality choices.  Black Bush is a variety of that has a higher malt whiskey content and can usually be found for around $30.  Redbreast is a tasty 12-year pot still whiskey  for around $40 is a unique Irish whiskey in that is is made entirely from corn (all other Irish whiskeys are made with at least some barley), which gives it a sweeter character – sort of like a bourbon with an Irish twist also runs around $40-$45

Welcome to the east stop of the Trump campaign shirt .besteestores You can also start to find a number of single malt Irish whiskeys around the same price range as Redbreast ($40-$50) like Knappouge and Connemara (which is peated so it is smokey like a Scotch whisky).  Of course, you can go much higher if you want to (Tyrconnell is good if somewhat overpriced, as is Middleton Reserve). Generally, I think the best whiskeys coming out of Ireland at the moment are being produced by the Cooley Distillery (Kilbeggan, Connemara, Tyrconnell), which is the only independent distillery operating in Ireland.  The other two distilleries (Middelton and Bushmills) are both owned by large international spirit companies.  But the other two distilleries are still making some excellent whiskey.
