Car Seat Headrest Album Twin Fantasy shirt .During quarantine in Brooklyn this summer, drag star Sasha Velour was going through her closet and sifting through her many costumes and props, when she uncovered a forgotten favorite. “There’s always something gorgeous and sparkly hidden in the it is in the first place but bottom of a box somewhere in my basement,” Velour says. “I found this yellow costume that I’d never quite used and was like, What can I do with it? We’re all about recycling!” In the movies, a character’s journey toward self-love and satisfaction is easy to track. She whips her cell phone into a fountain, pours herself a honking glass of red wine, relaxes into a steaming bath with a smile on her face, googles hiking tour for one, and poof! We have a self-actualized single woman (who, of course, is now magically deserving of love, thanks to the ever-mystifying logic of rom-com math). I’m still an anxious, dating-app-addicted mess, desperately swiping in the hopes that the perfect person will emerge before December, but I’m trying to run with the idea that my own company isn’t so bad. It’s certainly good enough to spend a couple of chilly months inside with, and after all, do I really want a quarantine buddy whose main redeeming virtue is that they were also single this fall?

It instantly inspired a new idea for Velour, who is known for her abstract drag style. (In the it is in the first place but past, her looks have included golden cyborg realness and re-creations of Edvard Munch’s iconic painting, The Scream.) “I imagined what my ideal sexy summer look would be, since we were trapped at home away from all swimming pools,” Velour says. “I dreamed of being a sickly sea monster with gnashing teeth and horrible warty hands, covered in gorgeous pearls.” Velour decided not only to revive the yellow piece, but to create a whole shoot around it too. The series of photos, shot by Mettie Ostrowski, are collected in a new monster-inspired zine that is available on Velour’s website today. Titled Creature From the Vinyl Lagoon, the zine sees Velour put her drag stamp on the classic 1954 horror film Creature From the Black Lagoon. (Aside from the cost of printing, 100% of the proceeds from the zine will benefit the Queer Detainee Empowerment Project, which assists LGBTQ+ people who are coming out of immigration detention “in securing structural, health/wellness, educational, legal, and emotional support and services,” according to its website.)
